This booklet is a learning resource designed specifically for neurodiverse learners who are developing early reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. The aim of the booklet is to help children practise reading short, simple stories and understanding what they read.

Each story uses short phonetic sentences and simple vocabulary that are easy for beginner readers to follow. After reading the story, learners answer questions by choosing the correct picture that matches the story. This approach supports children who benefit from visual learning and clear reading structure.

Sections / Themes included in the booklet

The booklet contains 10 simple short stories, each followed by picture-based comprehension questions.

1. Sam the Cat

Children read a short story about Sam the cat.

Example sentences include:

• Sam is a fat cat.

• Sam sat on a mat.

• Sam saw a rat.

• Sam ran to the rat.

Learners then answer questions such as:

• What is Sam?

• What did Sam see?

• Where did Sam sit?

2. Ben and the Hen

Children read about Ben and his pet hen.

Examples from the story:

• Ben has a red hen.

• The hen is in a den.

• Ben fed the hen.

Learners answer questions such as:

• What does Ben have?

• Where is the hen?

• The hen is Ben’s ______.

3. The Big Pig

This story focuses on a pig playing in mud.

Examples include:

• A big pig is in mud.

• Tim and Sam see the pig.

• The pig can run fast.

Learners answer questions about the story to check understanding.

4. The Red Bus

Children read a short story about Tim and Sam on a red bus.

Examples include:

• The bus is red.

• Tim is on the bus.

• The bus can stop and go.

Learners answer questions such as:

• What is red?

• Who is on the bus?

• What can the bus do?

5. The Fun Bug

Children read about a bug sitting on a log.

Examples include:

• The bug is on a log.

• A dog ran to the bug.

• The bug hid on the log.

6. The Big Box

This story focuses on a fox hiding in a box.

Examples include:

• A fox is in the box.

• A rat ran to the box.

• The big box is fun.

7. The Fun Run

Children read about a kid and a cow running together.

Examples include:

• A kid can run.

• A cow can run.

• They run in the sun.

8. The Pet Dog

This story describes a child and a pet dog.

Examples include:

• A pet dog is in a bed.

• The dog has a red tag.

• The kid fed the dog.

9. The Red Jam

Children read about red jam in a jar.

Examples include:

• The jam is red.

• The jam is in a jar.

• The bun fell down.

10. The Hat, Cat and Bat

This story focuses on rhyming words such as hat, cat and bat.

Examples include:

• A cat can sit in the hat.

• A bat can tip the hat.

• The hat can flip.
